Frequently Asked Questions

The honest answers, no fine print.
Why is it called Future Operating Base?

A Forward Operating Base is where a unit stages, resupplies, and plans its next move before pushing forward. That's the idea here — a base of operations for the transition ahead of you, not a single checkpoint you pass through once. "Future" instead of "Forward" is the reminder that this base is built around what's next, not what's behind you.

Why does this app matter?

Transition is scattered across a dozen offices, forms, and deadlines that nobody hands you as a single checklist. Future Operating Base exists to put the whole process — from a year out to years after — in one place, so nothing important gets missed simply because no one mentioned it in time.

Who benefits from this?

Anyone transitioning out of the military, at any stage — whether you're a year from separation or years past it. It's built to work for every branch, and useful whether you're just starting to think about TAP or you're already using the GI Bill or a VA home loan.

When can I start using this app?

Right away, at any point in your timeline. Earlier is better — some of the checklist items (like SkillBridge paperwork) have real deadlines — but the Education, Home Buying, Documents, and Glossary tabs stay useful for years after you separate.

Will this app keep my data private?

By default, everything — your checklist progress, your EAS date, your branch — stays only on your device and never leaves it. If you choose to sign in for cross-device sync, that same information is stored in your own private account, visible only to you. Nothing you enter is shared publicly or with anyone else using the app.

Is this an official DoD or VA app?

No — this is an independent, unofficial resource. It links directly to official sources (va.gov, dol.gov, and others) wherever possible, but always confirm dates, eligibility, and requirements with the VA or your installation before acting on anything here.

Do I need to create an account?

No. The whole app works fully without signing in. An account is only needed if you want your checklist progress to follow you across multiple devices.

Does this app cost anything?

No, it's free to use.

What if I find something inaccurate or out of date?

Benefits, forms, and rules change. Future Operating Base is meant as a starting point and a memory aid, not a final authority — always double-check anything time-sensitive or financial directly with the VA, your installation, or the linked official source before relying on it.
